Monywa

Fancy a trip to a typical Myanmar city off the normal tourist path? Take a trip to Monywa. It is the second largest city in northern Myanmar and is located 130 km west of Mandalay, roughly a 3 hour drive.

The pretty city is full of restaurants and markets and is the agricultural hub of the whole region encompassing large vegtable, cotton and sugar palm tree farms.

Beside the agricultural aspect of the region there are some interesting sightseeing places to visit. Have a look at the Shwezegon Pagoda, visit the Thambuddhe (Sambuddhe) Pagoda with its 500,000+ Buddha statues, climb up inside the 31 story high the Bodi Tahtaung Pagoda the world’s second tallest Buddha statue and wander through the cave complexes at Po Win Taung (full of ancient murals) and the nearby Shwe Ba Taung (referred to as the Petra of Burma).
